Torrid is a new specialty retail concept inspired by staggering amounts of requests from young, female shoppers. After an intense testing cycle and significant amounts of positive feedback, Torrid was born. "Many people don't realize that the junior mall apparel chains don't carry sizes 14 to 25, so if you want to wear the same hip fashion as your friends, you're out of luck!" Torrid caters to young women ages 15 to 29 that are part of the fastest-growing market segment in the United States, the plus-size market. The merchandise assortment at Torrid includes apparel, lingerie, shoes and accessories centered around the various lifestyles of young women today. The assortment is 50% private label and 50% well known junior brands like Paris Blues, Dickie, Hot Kiss and others. Providing the edgy appeal that teens are looking for in today's mall is the ever-popular Lip Service and Serious brands also found in sister-store, Hot Topic. Torrid opened its doors in mid-April, 2001 at the Brea Mall in Brea, California. The following five stores opened in Mission Valley, San Diego, California, Emerald Square, N. Attleboro, Massachusetts, Westroads Mall, Omaha, Nebraska, Annapolis Mall, Annapolis, Maryland and Southwest Plaza in Littleton, Colorado.
