A converted barbershop served as the original Woodwind store. With less than 800 square feet of space, a counter and shelves, to inventory the initial $3,500.00 in woodwind accessories, a company was born. As demand would dictate, woodwind instruments were later added to round out the offering. Early plans viewed the walk-in trade as important, but the key to major expansion was in developing a national list of woodwind musicians to solicit. From this modest beginning a new dynamic in the marketing and selling of music instruments was spawned---mail order---and it continued to grow, setting a standard for change in an industry stepped in traditional concepts.
Growth aspirations, foresight and common sense made the choice to add brasswinds and accessories a significant necessity. For The Woodwind, brass was the perfect "fit" to give the company an entree to the large band instrument market. With this came the company's new name. A name that would serve it well and become its standard of identification for the future. The Woodwind And Brasswind.
Electric guitars, amplifiers, midis, mixing boards, keyboards and more were added to The Woodwind and Brasswind lines of musical instruments. Thus, The Rock 'N Rhythm division was born and this essentially made the company a full service music center. Along with this came more growth and a serious need to create larger quarters to sell, warehouse, and ship from.
April, 1999 ushered in a new era for The Woodwind and Brasswind with the Grand Opening of its new, 120.000 square foot, headquarters. And it truly was a "grand opening." Old and new customers embraced the retail center. Mail order and web-based sales followed an upward trend that could only be attributed to The Woodwind and Brasswind's stunning new presence in the industry. Through the newly created efficiencies of the innovative operation, more telephone and administrative personnel were made available to serve customers. The warehouse, with its greater capacity for inventory, and the addition of sophisticated shipping techniques and handlers, added greatly to the company's customer focus. Today, billed as the "World's Largest Music Center," The Woodwind and Brasswind is one of the dominant forces in the music industry.
